About  the University

University of Madras was established on 1839 and it is the mother of almost all the old Universities of south India. This University has been growing from strength to strength while widening its teaching and research activities. 

​

The University imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology shape the academic tenor of the University. A number of institutions affiliated to Madras University concentrate on research activities offeringe Ph.D., Programmes in their respective field of specialisation.

The University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the five star rating first, and later with an A rating. The UGC has recognised the University as one of the centres for "potential for excellence" in the country.

ICASMDS  2018

The Department of Statistics is happy to announce an “International Conference on Advances in Statistical Methods and Data Science”, which will be held from 20-22, December 2018. The conference will be co-sponsored by the International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics (ISBIS). 

 

This conference plans to provide a forum for interaction and knowledge sharing among academicians, data analysts, practitioners, researchers and students in the domain of both Statistics and Computer Science. It provides a platform to present their research findings in the frontier areas of statistics and data science.

The department is pleased to inform that there will be a pre-conference workshop on Applied Time Series Analysis using R on 20-12-2018 by Prof. Nalini Ravishanker (University of Connecticut, USA) & Dr. Balaji Raman (Cogitaas, Mumbai).

About  Prof.  J.  Ranganathan 

Prof. J.Ranganathan, former Professor of Statistics, University of Madras and Presidency College, Chennai, is one of the senior most statisticians in South India and has been associated with some of the greatest Indian statisticians like Prof C.R. Rao, Prof S R S Varadhan, Prof B.K. Kale, Prof J. Sethuraman and Prof M. Krishniah (late) .

He did his schooling at Little Flower School – Salem, B.Sc. Honors in Mathematics at Presidency College - Chennai, M.S. in Statistics at Florida University, and Ph.D. from Savitribai Phule Pune University under Prof. B.K. Kale.

​

He has taught and inspired many students who are well placed both in India and abroad. He is an inquisitive researcher and still continues to mentor researchers. He is considered as one of the pillars for the growth and development of statistics in south India for his teaching and research guidance on Distribution Theory, Statistical inference and testing, Quality Control.

It is highly befitting and appropriate to honor Professor J.Ranganathan, for his immense contributions to the field of statistics through teaching and research.  Hence, the Department of Statistics, University of Madras has taken the initiative of conducting an international conference in his honour as befitting gesture for his services to the statistics fraternity.
